A Successful Gathering for LGBTQ+ Representation in Gastroenterology

In May 2024, the Rainbows in Gastro team had the privilege of attending the Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2024 in Washington, DC, where we hosted an exclusive networking event focused on the intersection of LGBTQ+ health and gastroenterology. This event, held as part of the LGBTQ+ at DDW series, brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates united by a shared mission: to promote inclusive and precision care for LGBTQIA+ patients in the realm of digestive health.

Fostering Community and Connection

The event was an incredible opportunity for attendees to come together, share their experiences, and build relationships within the gastroenterology community. At Rainbows in Gastro, our mission is encapsulated by the acronym CHARM, which stands for Community, Healing, Advocacy, Research, and Mentorship. These pillars guide our work as we strive to engage with our LGBTQIA+ community and improve healthcare outcomes for individuals with unique needs.

The networking event embodied the Community pillar, as we connected with professionals from across the country and beyond, each committed to advancing LGBTQ+ health. Conversations sparked around shared interests in inclusive care practices, research opportunities, and the importance of mentorship in empowering the next generation of LGBTQ+ gastroenterologists and healthcare providers.

Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Health in Gastroenterology

As we continue to witness disparities in healthcare for sexual and gender minorities, Rainbows in Gastro stands firm in our commitment to Advocacy. This event provided a platform for advocates and allies to discuss how to ensure equitable care for LGBTQIA+ patients, especially in areas like digestive health, where specialized knowledge and understanding are crucial.

We were able to highlight the gaps in healthcare that disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ individuals, such as barriers to accessing care, the lack of inclusive training for healthcare providers, and the need for better data collection on LGBTQ+ health outcomes. Advocating for these issues—both at the event and in our ongoing work—is a vital part of what we do at Rainbows in Gastro.
