Dr. Kira Newman (she/her) is a physician scientist focused on patient outcomes and the role of the microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan and currently serving as the Vice President of Rainbows in Gastro.
Dr. Newman collaborates in the US and internationally with scientists and clinicians on research and practice recommendations in gastroenterology and hepatology to improve LGBTQ+ health. She coordinates the LGBTQ+ IBD Research Collaborative, a workgroup open to researchers, clinicians, and patients, and she is the lead PI for a multicenter project to better understand the health of LGBTQ+ people with IBD.
She has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including in Gastroenterology, Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Annals of Internal Medicine. Her work has been supported by funding from the American College of Gastroenterology, the National Institutes of Health, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. She serves on the Women’s Committee and the Trainee and Early Career Committee for the American Gastroenterological Association and on the Digital Communications and Publications Committee for the American College of Gastroenterology.
